Fiber...What The F***?
One of the best kept weight loss and detox secrets I've ever known is dietary fiber. I know, not too sexy... but very consistent...the kind of friend you know you can count on when you need it most. When I was a kid I thought of fiber as something old people to to go to the bathroom...eck! gross!
Just like every other niche in the health industry, there's tons of marketing companies (advertising companies) which masquerade as health companies. In practical terms, that means we'll see many, many types of products marketed as "detox" programs. Often 3-7 day programs that are touted as quick-detoxes, they tend to stress the body more than anything, especially the organs, by forcing the lymph, blood and organ systems to "dump" toxins very quickly, essentially overloading the system in an unhealthy way, which is marketed as a quick-fix for an unhealthy lifestyle (mainly marketing hype for people too lazy or impatient to live a lean lifestyle).
In reality, the toxins don't get in the body all at once, but they do build up from repeated exposure and to detox all at once isn't what the body is designed to do...that yucky feeling of a fast or fast detox is actually the body being over-worked... not good.
Sometimes the detoxes include laxative type ingredients so as we're running to the restroom we can think, "Wow, I'm really detoxing...really doing myself good!"
In reality it's just a stress response. All the detoxes I have ever looked at in 20+ years on store shelves have so many ingredients that there's no way the body can process all those herbs which are supposed to be cleansing me!
It's just too much.
Easy Solution: fiber and clean water are the easiest and I think the healthiest way to CONSISTENTLY remove a little bit of toxins all the time... consistency is more important than intensity...hmmm, a theme here !
Surveys have shown that Americans get 8-12 grams of fiber on average. I suggest increasing your dietary fiber by 5 grams each week until you're consuming 50 grams a day on average.
Ever feel too full from high fiber foods? That means you increased too quickly. Ultimately, by increasing slowly over time that full "feeling"doesn't happen. If you do go too fast, simply cut back for a week and then resume. But, by looking at how much fiber is in each serving of food, you can easily increase your fiber...and guess what!...it's coming from a foundation of whole food!
The process of not being nutritionally hygienic and then trying to make up for the toxins with a "detox" hints of addictive type behavior. The time to think about toxins or detoxing is in each little choice you make throughout the day. It all adds up.
But guess what! Not only does fiber detox the body by binding with toxins and carry them out of the body gradually, it also stabilizes blood sugar / insulin levels, making it so your body burns more fat for energy, even while at rest. Stabilizing the blood sugar is the most important factor is burning fat, regardless of how much you exercise (via insulin sensitivity).
Yes, nutrition has a greater impact on fat loss than exercise...since you can't outrun poor nutrition with any amount if exercise!
Generally, when people increase fiber gradually they notice having more consistent energy and mental alertness which the energy drinks promise...yes, lack of energy can be from too little fiber and water.
It also helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol!
Personally, I easily get about 50 grams of fiber per day just from whole grains, the fruit smoothies and home made burritos... that picture of the burrito on yesterday's post has 12 grams of fiber in one tortilla!...not even counting the beans, rice and vegetables!
Once per week I take four herbal detox tablets which have a FEW key ingredients that GENTLY massage the organs to ENCOURAGE a detox without forcing the toxic body to "purge" (Herb-lax). That's really what we're doing if we consume SADCRAP at will and then try to go back and "get it out fast"...binge / purge. Done consistently, every day is detox day. Even the 1x / week tabs x 52 weeks = a lot of cleansing vs "binge" detoxing. Fruits and veggies generally have 3-4 grams per serving, but you can eat as much if them as you want! Google "fiber in fruit" and see for yourself.
SO... Look at labels, get curious about how much fiber you eat...as your fiber intake increases so will your energy and mental clarity!
Increase slowly; aim for 50 grams of fiber per day by one year from today.
The herbal detoxifier I use is here:
Do it now...do it consistently!
