Speeding Up Fat Loss Identity
Previously, I talked about the importance of identity for long-term, sustainable fat-loss.
In order for any healthy program to work, the inner vision of the self has to either lead, or at least keep up with the changes on the outside (gain lean mass & burn fat).
If the inner identity (vision of self) doesn't keep up, then every time you lean too far away from the way you have seen yourself, in the past, self-sabotage kicks in and any gain or loss is interrupted. The main ways to change the identity to a healthier version is to develop a fitness lifestyle ... in other words, if the gestalt / the whole thing, doesn't back up the healthy improvement changes you make then the old habit lifestyle will enable you to regress and stay the same or even gain more fat back...sound familiar?
SO! How to develop a fitness lifestyle to change your self image?
1) Invest time imagining and feeling what you want to emotionally feel like once you reach your goals (behaviors are drawn toward what you imagine for yourself).
Rehearse the completed picture and feelings at least in the morning upon awakening and before falling asleep. Doing it while looking in the mirror amplifies the effects.
2) Begin to associate with fitness oriented people. That doesn't mean throwing out the friends and family, it means begin to build a second circle of influence which includes healthier people. People who have already done it or at least have the same kind of goals AND commitment level...(saying is not doing). It could be as simple as attended a 5k walk. Just show up and watch people exercising.
3) Spend as much time, energy and money on health building things as you did on unhealthy. Workout gear, food, drink, etc. you'll see yourself differently wearing current, nice workout clothes.
4) Spend a little more time in the gym.
5) Self hypnosis.
6) Become curious and interested in learning about how to maximize your workouts.
7) If you have no idea, get help. If you think you know, check your work with body composition. Your body fat should decrease and lean mass increase on a monthly basis. (If it doesn't, look into your emotions surrounding the topic).
8) Gradual, but consistent progress. You're not expected to look like a pro athlete the first week. That's not reasonable. Simply improve what you do a little bit each day... Just a little. Just a little. Just a little!
Probably the biggest hurdle professional trainers see clients struggle with is when the client behaves as though the nutrition and training is an inconvenience to their fat lifestyle... in other words they think that by paying a trainer the trainers job is to show them how to keep doing and living how they have been, BUT get the benefits of a lean lifestyle.
It doesn't work that way. Some trainers refer to it as having a "chip" on the shoulder. (Long term fat loss requires an attitude change... fat loss requires so much energy that a bad attitude will sabotage you from the get-go).
One of the catch-22's is that the more inadequate your nutrition habits are, the more likely emotional instability will be: The more emotionally unstable you are the more difficult it is to have a good attitude that supports behavioral change for long term success, let alone short term success.
By deciding and committing to getting healthy, you're essentially making a business contract with your spirit to leave everything about the unhealthy lifestyle behind, in exchange for looking and feeling better than ever.
Like an addiction, becoming healthy means leaving the negative influences of an obese lifestyle behind...like any addict, if you associate with the factors that enabled the addiction you're not likely to escape. Create your new oasis of health!
TRUTH is that about 80% of Americans are over weight now. Many of them are looking for something that works and is healthy. The people who try to sabotage your efforts (intentionally or unintentionally) will come to you for help... you're not leaving your friends and family behind...you're simply stepping up to role-model status...role models for a way of living.
If someone wants what you have they would have to do some of what you did to get there, whether you are healthy or unhealthy!
By being reasonable, improving your attitude and having reasonable expectations you will smoothly transition to a newer, better you.
"Do it now, do it consistently!"
