Choosing An Excellent Sports Drink:
The idea behind sports drinks is valid. Whether the one you have been using is providing what is implied remains to be seen.
One reason sports drinks were designed relates to the timing of nutrition. The body uses carbohydrate, minerals and electrolytes and water faster than water alone can replace all these things quickly enough to benefit from water alone.
I often hear one of the nutritionists at Children's Hospital in Seattle repeat on the news that water works to hydrate the body as well as sports drinks.
If you only think in terms of pouring water into the body as hydration, this is true.
But if you think in terms of replacing water, carbohydrate and electrolytes fast enough for the body to utilize them, water by itself isn't even safe by itself during cardiovascular activity lasting an hour or longer.
(Water inside the digestive system doesn't benefit the brain or muscles right now).
Running, cycling, swimming, soccer and activities like this cause the body to use water, carbs and electrolytes faster than water can replace it, leaving the body to "hit the wall", the brain to "bonk" and potentially the person headed out in an ambulance from heat stroke and dehydration. Especially with children and teenagers; without added minerals and electrolytes the body can't absorb the water fast enough to prevent serious problems.
"Nutritionists" who say water alone is enough, have read that to be true, but haven't tried it themselves and likely haven't read the science itself. Water alone takes time to absorb and mix with the body chemistry.
Many of the products on the market we see marketed the most have some of the correct ingredients, but not in the correct ratio and with added vitamins, preservatives and coloring which serve no purpose to the active body let alone are they healthy to anyone.
Many of the products you see teams use help, but they are more of a sponsoring, marketing, advertisement than a real device that literally or optimally improves performance. Often, the fake ones cost more than the real ones to pay for the advertising!
When we drink water alone, the body has to pull minerals like sodium from the working muscles to mix with the water before it can be absorbed.
What that means is a delay in response from the product itself. In athletic endeavors it means the difference between doing "ok" or phenomenal, personal best performances.
In addition, the body only stores so much carbohydrate in the blood stream, muscles and liver. Once you use that up, it's too late to start putting it back in because it takes too long to rebuild it back up within the body. This effect is the reason why you'll see people looking drunk, falling down, dropping out of events, requiring IV fluids in the event medic tent and being hauled away in an ambulance.
(The body using water, carbs, & mineral / electrolytes faster than they are replaced by water alone).
Temperature and humidity also affect how much fluid and electrolytes the body uses.
The body that doesn't have enough of the above components fatigues earlier than current conditioning & fitness would expect. Whereas a person who is consuming a real hydration drink will feel stronger and their muscles will continue to fire, even though their conditioning level wouldn't suggest it. I'm constantly surprised by what it can do.
Some drinks tout complex carbohydrate, yet during training and events, complex carbs are too slow to work quickly enough to be effective right then. Some tout simple carbs but lack longer term energy, as in "at the finish line". Some have sodium but lack the other 5 electrolytes. Some have so much sodium that that instead of being absorbed they actually dehydrate the body...in other words, the ratios are scientific not haphazard based on flashy packaging.
So, if you're serious about getting the most efficiency and results from your workouts, rather than reasons why you aren't feeling so hot during your workouts, let me know. I can make a couple recommendations.
