Weight Loss & The Paradox of Self Delusion

One of the paradoxes of people who insist they don't want to be fat but continue the behaviors that got them that way is related to what they tell themselves is the truth of the matter.

In other words, when people tell themselves the truth of the matter, they can no longer deny that what they are doing or are not doing is the real problem.

Common features of this phenomena is when someone insists they don't eat junk food as they are putting junk food in their mouth. Or they insist they want to lose weight but they do the fat gaining behaviors and do not do the fitness behaviors. One of my favorites is when fat people purposely avoid fitness oriented people, culture activities and so forth and so they can behave as if the things that would support their fitness goals are strange and extreme...by doing so they justify not doing behaviors which are culturally accepted within the fitness industry.

Most common in this category is supplementation. You can take a person who is shoving their body fully of SADCRAP of all types to the point that all systems of their physiology are in distress, yet won't add a single serving of 20 grams of protein to their diet because to them it seems extreme. They'll spend hours and dollars getting their nails, eye lashes and hair done, but investing in supplements that will actually give them a physical and emotional boost needed to complete workouts.

The dynamic that allows this to go on is related to what the person is telling themselves (self talk) about what they are being told is needed to reach their goals. The see people who are in great shape and they tell themselves that they know what it takes to get there even though they haven't done it themselves (self delusion).

This happens in all industries. Not reading instructions, not asking for directions, hiring any professional but then not following their advice and so on.

When people don't do the things needed to reach their goals, its often because they are telling themselves they are an exception to the rules of nature or that the person trying to help them has some other agenda than to help them.

In my experiences, any time I cam across something that might help, I flowed though and measured the progress I made with it. If after three or four months there weren't any noticeable results then I threw that thing out and moved on...the clincher is that I truly applied it as if I would get the results promised rather than doing it half way and then saying the lack of success was about it and not me.

Tell yourself the truth of the matter and develop a way to know if you are telling yourself the truth. Otherwise, you'll get yourself in to a circle where you aren't giving anything a hundred percent effort and you won't get results and you won't know why even though you're investing some time, energy and money anyway.
