Being Meta To Previous Habits:

...especially related to fat loss:

I had an amazing and refreshing conversation with a client friend today. Refreshing because at least in my experience and professional opinion this person has had some new levels of break through in awareness, which will undoubtedly accelerate her progress toward attainment of her goals.

Whether you watch Biggest Loser or Extreme Weight Loss (or any competitive sport) you'll see that when clients or athletes have direct, hands on in-person training (exercise & nutritional) success is fairly predictable..."Do this, get that".

Yes, emotional issues can and generally do surface during the successful course of applying exercise and nutrition for fat loss purposes, (you can't get rid of the fat and stay the same emotionally), but it's always easier for the client when the trainer can "catch" the client beginning to run / demonstrate the dysfunctional, emotional pattern right in the moment in order to interrupt it and create the new, better functioning emotional habits that are more in alignment with the clients' stated goals (e.g. Trainer Jillian Michaels on Biggest Loser screaming at a client who says they are having such strong feelings they can't walk / move on a motorized tread mill, for example...move through the feelings and let them go...they are not an accurate standard for what you are capable of, especially in the moment).

Once the client isn't in the immediate presence of the trainer and they continue their work / journey on their own it becomes somewhat more challenging for some clients...-mainly people who habitually tend to emotionally avoid examining and listening in on their emotional self talk...(in order to create comfort in the moment which tends to sabotage long term goal achievement).

Hint, hint...yes, I am saying that people who tend to reach the really big goals (all categories of goals even outside of fat loss & fitness) tend to put off the short term comfort & satisfaction (the cookie, the cake, the alcohol, the SADCRAP, etc.), in order to reach the goal they INSIST they want but could never attain.

What was so exciting in talking with my friend today was that she said she had gotten to the point where 1) When she got home from work early one day and really felt more like sitting down on the sofa and skipping her workout she had presence of mind to ask herself, "What is that? Why would I skip my workout? Why would I make that choice?" And so on.

In doing so she realized that it's in those little choices where she is either on track or off track from reaching her goals....moment to moment choices.

And that's what it comes down to...choosing to be conscious enough in the moment (also known as being present) that each healthy decision to act and move forward on the science of fat loss (exercise & nutrition density) that the consistent, seemingly small and insignificant actions cumulatively add up to results in alignment with your goals (The first 21 days of developing new habits tend to be the greatest perceived challenge for many people.)

There was a lot more to this nearly hour long conversation, but the points that stood out to me were that she was "thinking about what she was thinking"...she was listening in on her conversation with herself...she was meta (above but still part of her experience, a.k.a. maturity) to the emotional coping mechanism that was saying, "Skip it, do it later... You don't feel like it." She heard it, listened to it and replied back with thoughts, emotions, and then behaviors that are in alignment with her stated goals...she went to the gym and did her workout!!

As a side note, she has been consistent with eating whole foods, skipping the SADCRAP and supplementing consistently for MONTHS!

In my personal and professional experiences, without the nutritional components (whole food & supplements) many-a-persons' brain doesn't function at high enough cognitive level to 1) Notice when one is getting off track 2) Pay attention to the emotional conversation long enough to notice the potential in the moment to get off track 3) Acknowledge the difference between what you say you want and what the old habits or procrastination and avoidance are attempting to sabotage and finally 4) Overriding the procrastination and avoidance with simply doing the science of exercise and nutrition (discipline, also dependent on a nutritionally fueled frontal brain).

Without enough nutrition in the brain, people have the emotional feeling of not wanting to work out or cheating nutritionally but miss out on noticing it, acknowledging it and then over riding it... the undernourished brain seems unable / incapable of this process...yes, I'm talking about paying attention, attention span, emotional intelligence, maturity and fortitude.

So, in short, I felt so refreshed and inspired because any trainer can force a client to perform, but what the clients do once they're at home, on their own, navigating day to day life is where the trainer AND the client finds out if they have really done their homework (their internal work / self development / introspection), so that when situations arise where choice to "do and follow through" or "skip out and cop out" the client sets the dysfunctional, emotion based coping mechanisms aside and simply does what science has shown to work (exercise & nutrition). -Just F'in do it!

Any trainer worth their "weight" in gold is going to be emotionally attached to the client reaching their goals. Not because they want it for themselves but rather the really good trainers stick with their career long enough that they know what they're doing and it really comes down to screening and sorting potential clients who will take what the trainer has proven to work and then the clients applying it on themselves whether the trainer is present or not.

The really great trainers stick with their career for the love of helping give clients the life they haven't been able to locate on their own. The really, really great trainers have gone way beyond imagining that exercise in itself fixes everything and become obsessed with you, as the client getting enough nutrition in your brain that you can over ride outdated, dysfunctional emotional habits.

When you find a trainer who is that good, attach yourself to them. Get them to tell you, show you and demonstrate what to do, then ask them to hold you accountable...then you do your part (the great trainers probable already know what it takes for you to reach your goals...its up to you to Just Do It.).

Just do what they show you to do without making excuses or arguing and you'll likely get amazing results. It's that simple.

My friend from the conversation did the work even when I wasn't present and she's inspiring me.
