All Diets Work?

Within the fitness and wellness industry there happens to be cliché saying that tend to circulate every few years which sound real good but can actually distract, confuse and interfere with your progress.

A common one is, "Calories in, calories out" meaning simply reduce you calories to "lose weight". This sounds real good and even sounds rational, but its not. The reason its not is because calorie related "weight loss" is short term and followed up by even more weight gain, since restricting calories lowers the metabolic rate setting you up for rebound weight gain. (Calories have to be adjusted the first of each month based on your current body composition, activity level and current goals). [Each month you exercise, your metabolism increase a little and the more fit you get the higher your caloric needs, to an extent]

Caloric reduction weight loss results in lean mass loss, not body fat, which compounds the lower metabolic rate and results in mediocre weight loss that bounces back. "Calories in, calories out" is really a lazy approach to the science and art of a lean & healthy lifestyle and is the equivalent of saying "To get better gas mileage in your car, put less gas in the tank". And it makes as much sense.

Another saying that goes in the category is, "

All diets work?

Again, within the fitness industry, you'll hear things and hear people who really have no more business talking weight loss than prescribing medications a doctor would, say things without adequate thought. That goes for any industry...myth, cliché, ...things that are easier to say than to research, apply, measure and really find out and know the truth of the matter.

There's certainly a segment of the population which is neither a professional trainer (let alone a seasoned trainer), nor a client themselves, nor the kind of health care provider who really knows the science of fast, sustainable, health & fitness. Even within the medical community a portion of the information available to health care providers is actually designed so that you won't get results with proper, scientific exercise and nutrition so you'll then conclude "it doesn't work" and resort to more invasive treatment(s) as well as prescriptions which don't work as well in the long run as proper, scientific exercise and nutrition.

So, from those health care providers who aren't submerged in the fitness industry nor doing the fitness lifestyle themselves nor needing to apply the stuff on themselves, its just easier to say something like, "Do anything...all diets work!"...because you get sick of hearing people complain but not take proper action nor follow through long enough to get results!

Part of this phenomena is because health care providers see the affects of being fat on the entire health everyday..they want you to get healthy and be healthy so they don't have to keep giving more medications that simply cover up the symptoms of lack of exercise and nutrition density..there's only so much any doctor, physician assistant or nurse can do for you...you have to do it for yourself....and when you continue to show up with the same complaints (whether with friends, family, or the doctors office or E.R.), but do everything EXCEPT get lean and healthy, you're taking time away from the patients who are doing the correct things to get healthy and still require professional help...its really an arrogant (fear + anger), selfish, self-absorbed way of living and being in the world. .

If a person keeps going to the doctor for the same problems (e.g. joint pain, back pain, lack of energy, etc.) but you don't take charge to change your lifestyle it can becomes frustrating since the doctor is doing their part (checking on you) but you aren't doing your part (proper, scientific exercise and nutrition density).

I mean if someone keeps repeating the same thing to you and you give your best input and they ignore what you say then you repeat the same thing again...what's up with that?!

The primary problem with the "All diets work" mentality is that it doesn't say what kind of weight gets lost. Simply getting "smaller" is not the answer. Most often, if your exercise and nutrition density program isn't specifically set up to retain lean mass and burn fat for energy (you have to get trained for this) the opposite happens...the person looks smaller but they have actually retained the fat or even gained fat but gotten smaller from loss of lean tissue.

Very unfortunately, a small portion of medical care providers know that a large portion of the population wants the miracle quick fix and they simple give up and begin offering quick-fix diets or treatments which provide short term weight loss resulting in long term weight gain (you get tired of telling patients the same thing and them insisting, "... there must be an easy  quick fix you aren't telling me about".)..people think if a doctor is offering or treating then it must be good and "...If they haven't told me about it they must be keeping it a secret since the TV commercials say I can find the quick fix for $19.95".

But, there's many cases of doctors who over prescribe narcotics or perform treatments they really don't have the experience in with disastrous results. I just saw a news blurb here in Montana where a physician is facing 400 felony charges for improperly prescribing medications. Amphetamines were very popular prescriptions for weight loss, approved for such and yet they were found to damage the valves of the heart itself. When I was in Hawaii in 2014 there was a dentist who would overdo the anesthesia and lose patients that way. I heard of a doctor who wasn't properly sanitizing his surgical tools and people got sick from that.

What you really want is a doctor, physician assistant and nurse who tell you the truth and maybe even encourage you to keep doing (correct) exercise and nutrition density. The truth hurts, but it sets you free and leads you to what you insist you want.

So, there's always going to be people who want to cut corners, avoid the real work they need to do and seek the latest miracle cure. We simply can't save every person...some people are too far into self denial and avoidance to be helped (until they get real). The people who are most likely to reach their goals and sustain the results they get are the ones who face up to the personal responsibility of getting properly trained, continuing to increase their knowledge based, monitor their results and fine tune their progress as they go. No one succeeds in a perfectly straight line...it just doesn't happen. But when you pay attention and monitor your results on a monthly basis the way I suggest in other posts, you'll get better results than 80% of the population.

No matter what program you apply, you have to get to the point where you're learning more, refining your process and applying what you have learned about yourself.

All diets do something, but most do more harm than good!

Ask for help.
