The Controlling Force of Life:
Your Self Image
Part I
Your Self Image
Part I
Believe it or not, in terms of the most humanly possible affect(s) we can have on our own existence, self image (how we unconsciously see ourselves or think of ourselves deep in the back of our mind) is the single greatest factor in terms of what we create, do, have and become in life.
Similar to love, values and individual choices, self image is an intangible thing (can't carry it in a bucket) which affects us in real time on a daily basis.
Side note: Although spirit is viewed as the highest level of functioning & existence, once you truly learn the ins and outs and the boundaries of the information herein, you might realize these concepts are not to say that your self image is either limited by your spiritual capability nor that the self image is a more powerful factor than spiritual health...I would be more likely to compare self image to the human spirit what the computer is to the internet...a function and capability within the bigger system itself, but limited in its potential by the human mind itself depending how the end user consciously chooses to utilize it. Self image is not exclusive of spirit, nor higher than spirit, but to be used in conjunction to maximize the ability of spirit to raise the individual to their highest potential, both for physical health & well being and spiritual health and balance. How self image relates to this duality, is that as sentient beings (able to think about and analyze our own thoughts) we have free will and autonomy to exercise free will and that includes using our mental & emotional faculties to become better versions of ourselves or leave it to chance...spiritual beings with free will.
Although you may have not given your self image much thought before, (some people didn't even know it exists), in simple terms, self image is how you see yourself in the world and that image that you may not even know you have, determines who you are today and what the rest of your life will be like...self image is the single greatest factor which determines your potential in all areas of life...health, family, financial, recreation, career, spiritual and so on.
In practical terms, you might have heard / seen interviews of music artists, athletes and other top performers tell story after story of how they would look in the mirror in the bedroom growing up and envision reaching the top of their game, regardless of their niche...rehearsing their ultimate success.
Some of the stars who stand out and whom I remember in this way include Tiger Woods (golf), Avril Lavigne (music), Adam Levine (music), Michael Jordan (basketball), Bill Gates (Microsoft) and so on...this list is barely the tip of the iceberg. When you watch interviews of people who have reached the level of success they aspired to, a common denominator is they all had a vision in their mind of what they aspired, intended, expected and relentlessly worked toward.
In other words, in all areas of their mind and emotions they are [completely lined-up and congruent] in what they want and see for themselves, regardless where they started from, how unlikely they were to succeed, regardless of who their role models were growing up, regardless of what resources they had available to them and so on.
People who reach goals and lifestyles which surpass where they started from haven't allowed their current circumstances, nor the supposed rationale of those around them to determine who they are becoming in the future.
...what determines where a person is today and ends up is determined by how they see themselves, just outside their conscious awareness.
How? Why so much importance?
Self image controls beliefs, beliefs control habits, habits determine actions, actions determine what you accomplish and then it comes full circle to self image...regardless what you achieve, if your self image doesn't get updated to match the new you, you'll regress back to previous version of yourself...or worse!
In short, some people can have such a clear image of themselves that life for them seems to revolve around them and things come easy (lack of incongruity or utter clarity and intent without conflicting self image) and for some congruity, clarity and intent (without conflicting purpose or agenda) requires more practice, intent and focused habit development. In either case it doesn't really matter where a person is or started from as long as they can get completely clear about what they want for themselves and then go about creating (at first) a conscious image of the 'finished product' followed by repetition of the consciously created self image, which in turn becomes an unconscious self image...after all, that's how your current self image has been created.

Where people tend to accidently interfere with their own process of creating their own improved self image is where the idea of 'incongruity' comes into play. The idea of incongruity, in simple terms, means two ideas that are in direct competition with each other. When two ideas compete with each other (inner conflict) not only are goals difficult to achieve, the ideas related to early development or trauma, stress and coping with disappointments tend to run the show at the unconscious level, which is what determines behaviors....the reason being that ideas, whether productive or unproductive are "charged by the emotions" related to the situation...that's right, when you combine the vision of what you want with the positive emotions and expectations of the completed success of who you aspire to become you successfully override all the prior (so called negative programming and experiences) that influenced the behaviors of what you didn't want for yourself.

A simple example would be if someone wants to be lean and healthy and fit, but the messages they received, especially during developmental years or the ideas they envisioned were the opposite of lean, healthy & fit. Remember, the self image determines which actions a person habitually takes (behaviors) on a daily basis...behaviors and actions which seem natural and familiar are controlled by the self image which has been created either inadvertently (left to chance) or on purpose.
Whether the ultimate goal is to be lean & healthy or wealthy & debt free or have a happy, healthy relationship when a person has conflicting outcomes, goals or agendas (e.g. to be loved vs to be right all the time and win every argument), or to learn how to get lean and healthy vs not wanting to be told what to do or even saying they want to be wealthy but value pleasing their parents who insist people who are wealthy are crooks...you get it (inner conflict of opposing values).
Anytime there is a conflict of values in the back of the mind, the person won't make sustainable progress regardless how much time they seem to invest in the project in the world outside their head...the self image isn't clear. So you can see the value of examining what might be playing in the back of your mind.
How to know?
A common question is how to know what is playing in the back of your mind outside your awareness? The easiest way is to look at your life in the major categories (health, family, financial, career and recreation, etc.) and what kind of existence you're having is THE reflection of your self image.
If you are fat and unhealthy...self image.
Can't stick to a workout program...self image.
If you are broke & in debt...self image.
Can't make enough money...self image.
If you argue more than you love...self image.
If you feel empty...self image.
If you work too much and play too little...self image.
and so on.
There isn't a single category of life that isn't affected by how you see yourself in the back of your mind.
And the luxury we have is we can re-invent our image, re-start and get a fresh start beginning today.
When you hear yourself and other say, "Oh, I tried that program and [it] didn't work, for me" what they are really saying is that they hadn't developed a congruent image to [allow / permit] the program to work...they unconsciously interfered in their own progress...they weren't working the program but rather expecting the program to do them, versus doing the program...one represents "change from the inside out" and the latter shows the person expects the program to affect them "from the outside in" (mal-formed outcome)....like saying you're going to go snow skiing on the concrete in the middle of a hot summer's day...mal-formed outcome...it sounds good but makes no rational sense.
The people who seem to find ease in endeavors have developed their self image which allows the mind to create the energy to [do the thing] to completion and sustain the results.
In simplest terms, you simply make a list of who you want to experience life as, see the finished result, attach the emotions you would have once its completed and then repeat the process in your mind until it becomes the unconscious, operating system. Once the new images and emotions hold as much weight and relevance as the old unfit, fat, unhealthy images combined with the work to earn the new version you'll be living a new version of you.
Where people trip themselves up (fail to maintain the new accomplishment / fight the process / challenge the laws of nature / sabotage any results they get) is to fail to change their self image to the new version of themselves. Without changing your self image, even God won't be able to make you change...(free will). Miracles are miracles but we've all seen people who seem to get a blessing and then it goes away...that's the incongruity / conflicting outcomes...and what happens when there's conflicting outcomes? The old patterns associated with prior self image have a better track record / more traction and the old image surfaces, which controls behaviors which manifests as unconscious habits (actions) which manifests as the old reality (a.k.a. bad luck).
The people who seem to burn fat easily and get really lean, happy, healthy and maintain it? They changed their self image either consciously or unconsciously / on purpose or inadvertently. Sometimes people have already developed their self image prior to beginning their workout program so the process itself is effortless ...it matches their image which controls the behaviors (makes the process seem easier [perception] than someone with a poor, under developed self image).
An example of how self image will interfere in weight loss would be when someone seems to be into their workouts, but seem to accumulate more and more injuries (even though they are working within their physical conditioning and limits) [the conflicting self image will create reasons to not do the activities that would get the stated goals]. there's no way to outsmart the outdated self image other than creating a new, updated self image that congruently matches your desired outcome. Notice it in other people and your environment.
For an in depth study of this phenomena, read the book, Psychocybernetics by Maxwell Maltz (1961). Updated version (2015).
