“I see you to succeeding"
series

The B.N.B.B.s...WTF?

What’s the big deal…about the
Basic Nutritional Building Blocks
and cravings for sweets?

B.N.B.B.s is a term I coined over the years as a way to help people like you and me get what we want most from life and living. B.N.B.B.s is an acronym used to make it easier to talk about a whole bunch of things the cells require to maintain the health of themselves, thereby producing health and wellness of the body. The B.N.B.B.s are not optional…they are…essential

The cells are made of the B.N.B.B.s. That is what the cells of the body are made of!

In India’s ayurvedic  system of health the physical body is referred to as:
Ana Maya Kosha: the body that comes from food.

If we do not eat enough of the B.N.B.B.s the body begins to de-grade and break-down and wear out in various ways traditionally referred to as the" normal aging process" (loss of bone, lean tissue and gain of body fat as well as various de-generative conditions). The B.N.B.B.s are required by the cells of the body.

When I refer to the B.N.B.B.s. I am talking about:

  • Non-GMO, Certified Organic Protein
  • Food concentrate multi-vitamin
  • Good Fats
  • Pro-biotics
  • Extra B-Complex
  • Extra Vitamin C
  • Extra E-Complex

When the cells of the body have enough B.N.B.B.s the end result is full functioning of the body, which leads to optimal health, ability to exercise, building of muscle and burning of unnecessary body fat. When the cells do not have enough, progress slows and may even halt, the body adding fat even if you are working out on a regular basis…also known as a plateau.

People often want to build lean mass and burn fat, while unknowingly starving themselves of nutrition, thinking that eating less will help rid the body of fat which we now know is wackbards.

Cravings for sweets and fats is normal for a mal-nourished body, deficient of the B.N.B.B.s.

Catch #1: The more deficient a person is of the B.N.B.B.s, the longer it takes for them to recognize the importance of them and actually get them and take them everyday. They might say something like, “Oh, I don’t need that”, or “I’m too smart for that”, or “How could he possibly know what I need…he’s not a doctor or a chemist or anything."

In other words, the under-nourished brain cannot recognize love, compassion nor accurate information when it is so deficient of the B.N.B.B.s that its main concern is to immediately increase energy levels, via SADCRAP.

The body prioritizes where food and nutrition / energy gets used to keep this machine we call the body running as smoothly as possible. So, the brain gets first pick, next the heart gets what is left over and so on. When the upper brain is nourished adequately (when there are enough B.N.B.B.s circulating in the body), with the B.N.B.B.s, the person simply picks up and consumes the foods which are good for the body and foods which are not as good simply get over-looked (the well nourished brain simply blocks them out of awareness)…they become a distant memory. The well nourished body and brain craves more nutrition while the undernourished brain craves more SADCRAP.

Where as the person who does not have enough B.N.B.B.s is being guided by what I refer to as the primal-brain (fast-energy food and beverage seem attractive and seductive), in that the person who does not have enough B.N.B.B.s will be attracted to sweets and fats as the body is telling them they are deficient to the point that the brain is primarily concerned with keeping it’ energy up so it can keep the other system running properly, without the ability to take the longer-term consequences into account…e.g. keep the machine running long enough and at some point the machine may come across some real nutrition (B.N.B.B.s).

Catch #2: Just because you have not heard of this or used them does not mean your cells do not require them…the cells require them…period!

Catch #3: To the person who is deficient of the B.N.B.B.s, eating sweets and fats and being attracted to warm caffeinated drinks seems like an emotional issue…when in reality, deficiency comes first, followed by emotional attachment; the emotions come into play stronger / more intensely when the body is deficient of the B.N.B.B.s…(symptom of the lower brain doing whatever it can to make up for deficiency of the B.N.B.B.s in the upper brain).

You see, the emotions are a great motivating factor to take action and the brain will make use of them to attempt to get the B.N.B.B.s into your cells...but the actions the emotions inspire are rarely productive when it comes to health.

In nature, brightly-colored foods have higher levels of nutrients in them. But in this fast-paced, over-processed world products which do not have any nutrition, yet are packaged like nutritiously colored foods can confuse the malnourished mind leading to cravings for things which are not in alignment with your short and long-term goals whether they be to gain muscle, build fat or build long-term health.

Catch #4: Will-power is a function of the brain which has enough B.N.B.B.s. Without them, the person feels like they have no will-power to resist the sweets and fats and once they take a bite they cannot stop…remember the Lays Potato Chips commercial, “You can’t eat just one”?

And why would we, if the organ which makes it possible for us to inhabit the body says, “Get the blood sugar up fast,” who are we to fight it, the brain runs the show…does it not?  So there isn’t anything fundamentally wrong with the person who craves sweets and fats, it just means the brain is prioritizing and until the B.N.B.B.s are introduced everyday, thereby the brain having the hands pick healthier foods the cravings will not permanently disappear.

BUT, once you have the B.N.B.B.s in your body everyday, the relative importance of your favorite S.A.D.C.R.A.P. simply goes away…and then you get it…and you recognize it in those around you as well.

Catch #5: We can always over-ride the body’s attempt to get the B.N.B.B.s. We can tell ourselves, “I don’t need them”, or that “I don’t like them,” or that “They are a waste of energy,” or “I would prefer to get nutrition from food alone,” …or any other number of reasons…but that does not change the fact that the cells require them…even if we try to convince ourselves that we are too good to succumb to the natural laws of health.

In my extensive experience as a personal trainer and licensed health care provider as well as a life-long student of health, longevity and healing I have found that about 80% of the results one gets (or does not get) in their health and fitness goals is related to getting enough nutrition into the cells. And I know of only one way to get enough nutrition everyday…and as you know, I used to be a sugar-freak!

In my experiences, good, clean food is essential for reducing toxins (the foundation of nutrition) and the B.N.B.B.s provide what food cannot. I have not found an exception yet. People who try to ignore the need for the B.N.B.B.s by the cells and simultaneously try to “will-power” themselves through the cravings are agreeing to ignore nature’s communication that (at the cellular level, the cells are starving for real nutrition)…eating food and nutrition are two different things.

Eat enough of the B.N.B.B.s to create a nutritional-savings account and you’ll have more energy to do things other than denying yourself what you are convinced you want, but tell yourself you should not have…I promise.

If you would like help getting the B.N.B.B.s, I use some called Vitalizer. And you know what, the guarantee you'll feel better in some way in 30 days or you'll get your money back. I've been using them since 1993. If you want I can show you how to get a 15% discount. And yes, they are all higher quality than certified organic and GMO free. I don't know if you'll get as good results as I do, but there's no risk.

Are You Subscribing To A Pet-Theory
or Doing What Works?

One of the most sad situations I consistently see in the fitness industry is when people get attached to what I refer to as a "pet-theory" regardless of whether they are experiencing any measurable results.

Some examples that we may all have seen are people who are self proclaimed vegetarians or vegan, but suffer from the side effects of malnutrition (iron deficiency, etc.).

What's even worse is when these people are promoting their pet theory to others even though their own health is reflecting the side effects of their pet.

I think what happens is that people get attached to an idea or a model, for the sake of being attached to a model, without knowing they need to establish a standard of whether the model they have chosen is actually healthy or not.

To compound the problem, the more malnourished a person gets the more defensive they get to the possibility their model might be doing more harm.

As a result of decades of personal and professional experience I have learned that what I think about my ideas and what I teach my clients is irrelevant if their health isn't improving as a result of the model I teach.

One of the things you routinely hear from clients is about their conversations with their physicians about their attempts to lose weight and get healthy. In that regard you also figure out that, as a legitimate trainer, you have to develop at least a couple ways to scientifically measure whether what you're recommending is actually improving health and vitality (aside from rapid weight loss, appearing smaller or clothes fitting better).

One of the things I looked at over the years, especially during my days at Gold's Gym, Capital Hill, Seattle where I would work with six or more clients each day was how to hold myself accountable to my clients' success, how to know what to do if they weren't making progress, how to accurately measure progress the clients would be happy with and how to measure in a way that made sense to physicians and satisfied the physician's standard of healthy, sustainable progress.

In my extensive experiences, it doesn't matter what I think of a program if the client's blood chemistry doesn't improve as a result of the nutrition and fitness program I suggest.

When I talk about blood chemistry  & physiology
improvement, some of what I'm talking about are :

a1C (3 month average of blood sugar)
Blood Pressure
Triglycerides
High Density Lipoprotein
Low Density Lipoprotein
Total Cholesterol
Bone density
Iron
Metabolic panel

Without improvement in these blood chemistry and physiological markers, any changes that appear to happen on the outside are superficial and likely short lived. The reason being that without an improvement in these markers, the program is likely enabling weight loss based on inadvertent malnourishment which will likely revert within a short time. Without improvements in these markers, you really can't validate your theories to your client's physician.

On the other hand, when these markers do improve, you can bet the cells themselves are being nourished and likely will replicate themselves resulting in overall improvement in health and vitality.

What I also found was that when these markers improve, through proper nutrition, clients don't tend to have cravings, binging or unplanned eating or attraction to S.A.D.C.R.A.P.
In other words, when the body is well nourished, versus withholding nutrients in the name of weight loss, overall health and balance improves without causing harm. That's the standard I use and recommend. I realize some trainers simply don't have the experience to juggle all the factors (resistance training, cardio and nutrition) until they have a enough experience under their belt, seeing what definitely doesn't work.

What tends to happen with aspiring trainers is that they hear about a theory that 'sounds' like it calls to a higher ideal...take vegetarianism for example and it's proported benefits beyond improvements to the clients' health, and then go about promoting the model more so based on how it affects factors beyond the clients' health. In some cases, trainers become so preoccupied that they consider the side effects of a pet theory a casualty of a 'higher calling" and can't to the best of their intentions get their clients (or their own for that matter) blood chemistry to improve, since the model itself prohibits optimum health.

Unfortunately, the more malnourished a person gets, the more they resist doing the changes that would improve their health.

The second way I assure that my clients are happy with the results they get is to measure their body composition once a month. If you don't measure body composition, resting heart rate and calorie requirements (based on body composition) the first of every month, then all efforts of exercise and nutrition are random and based on chance...meaning a wasteful approach in terms of time, energy and money since it isn't based on the clients current level of conditioning or physiological requirements to make continual progress.

So, as you know there are thousands of models of fitness and nutrition but if they don't improve blood chemistry and body composition, they aren't taking your individual physiological requirements into account and any short terms improvements will likely regress in fairly short order.

Pet theories take the trainer's ego into account but often do not address the factors which actually improve health from the inside out.

Perfecting Your Neurosis

Perfecting your neurosis refers to doing everything and anything except do the things you need to do to get what you insist you want.

A crude example of this behavior is if someone says you have to work out three days per week to burn fat, so you work out two days per week. Or if a trainer says to do three cardio workouts of 20 minutes each and you do one of 60 minutes and then don't workout for the next 6 days.

Extreme versions of this include when people seek out professionals who help people reach a goal in whatever category to learn all the suggestions and then going out of their way to not do those things and even do the opposite things...that way they can tell everyone they have tried everything and nothing works!

Believe it or not, this stuff goes on all the time in all industries. This is part of the reason why there are more spectators than participants in any category of endeavor or activity. This is part of the reason why there is more money made on weight loss gimmicks than actual science based program that always work. (You can count on part of the population doing behaviors that get the opposite results of what they insist they want). Part of the dynamic originates out of situations where people have gone through extreme stress, trauma or torment (or even if they only perceive they went through stress) where they perceived they didn't have any control over themselves, their choices or their situations so they create scenarios where they are the only ones who have the control they so intensely seek. One way that people can get a sense of control over their lives is to slow down progress itself...by slowing progress down, including getting healthy and well, they feel less stressed but ultimately the process causes more stress.

If a person was able to come to terms with the idea that "...that was then and this is now", and fully em-body it, the purpose  of attempting so much control that you have no control would readily outlive its usefulness. But, that's where psychology and physical health merge.

Information Transduction is the concept of the physical brain, through use of the mind takes ideas in and converts them to chemical messengers and behaviors within the body. One of the tricks of this process is when people initiate a process out of a coping mechanism and the mind takes them on and they become unconscious habits which interfere with newer, more updated goals and initiatives. In essence, its similar to how hypnosis works (a repetitive message given that is accepted at some level), its just that you can use negative self hypnosis as effectively and in many cases a misunderstanding of an idea exists where people draw conclusions about information in their environment or even take messages in from people who weren't mentally healthy to begin with. Think what would happen to a child if their paranoid schizophrenic parent who happens to be obese continually says, "You look just like me". The level of confusion and misunderstanding that can occur in the child's mind is unlimited.

Again, ultimately, the science of strategic exercise and nutrition is proven...what interferes and prevents a person from making progress is their ability to manage their mind, manage the messages from the outside world and manage the messages they repeat over and over in their mind.

You Have As Much Right To Fail As Succeed!

One of the mind-tricks people play on themselves in regard to maintaining healthy body composition and fitness is that they tell themselves that, "No one can make me...". In reality its true and any healthy trainer or medical provider isn't interested in "making" anyone do anything, even when its in the client / patient's own best interest.

In regard to healthy weight (both directions of it), more often than not the psychological and emotional factors are the main factors that are interfering in progress.

What that means, as if I haven't said it enough, is that the science and the "doing" of exercise and nutrition is already well known and proven to work...where it breaks down (for most everyone) is when the client has unresolved psychological and emotional issues that are running in the background, which literally stop the weight loss / gain process. (As long as there is an unresolved emotional issue, the physical aspects of weigh loss halt.)

Specifically, the need to gain attention is one of the most common attributes involved. Whether a person is insisting they can't lose weight or can't gain weight, ultimately it comes down to gaining attention in unnatural ways...e.g. the more a person insists they can't lose weight the more attention they get from people wanting to help them. There's a few dis-ease processes that work this way. Left to its own, these aspects become neurosis-based habits which the person has so perfected the neurosis takes on a life of its own and the person can honestly insist they don't know what they're doing...all habits become unconscious at a certain point.

So just because you set the fat, unhealthy lifestyle up out of a coping mechanism, insisted you didn't know and then perfected the process to the point you aren't even aware of it anymore doesn't mean you're not responsible, capable and the one who has to do the exercise and nutrition while simultaneously work your way back through, so you can experience the same stressors but make better, more healthy, generative decisions and establish equally healthy habits in the current time now.

You can insist, whether consciously or unconsciously, that no one can make you...and you're right...but in order to get the results you say you want you have to let that concept go and allow people to help you. You might even, in the process, figure out why you wanted to make yourself unhealthy and then insist no one can make you healthy! Control!

All Diets Work?

Within the fitness and wellness industry there happens to be cliché saying that tend to circulate every few years which sound real good but can actually distract, confuse and interfere with your progress.

A common one is, "Calories in, calories out" meaning simply reduce you calories to "lose weight". This sounds real good and even sounds rational, but its not. The reason its not is because calorie related "weight loss" is short term and followed up by even more weight gain, since restricting calories lowers the metabolic rate setting you up for rebound weight gain. (Calories have to be adjusted the first of each month based on your current body composition, activity level and current goals). [Each month you exercise, your metabolism increase a little and the more fit you get the higher your caloric needs, to an extent]

Caloric reduction weight loss results in lean mass loss, not body fat, which compounds the lower metabolic rate and results in mediocre weight loss that bounces back. "Calories in, calories out" is really a lazy approach to the science and art of a lean & healthy lifestyle and is the equivalent of saying "To get better gas mileage in your car, put less gas in the tank". And it makes as much sense.

Another saying that goes in the category is, "

All diets work?

Again, within the fitness industry, you'll hear things and hear people who really have no more business talking weight loss than prescribing medications a doctor would, say things without adequate thought. That goes for any industry...myth, cliché, ...things that are easier to say than to research, apply, measure and really find out and know the truth of the matter.

There's certainly a segment of the population which is neither a professional trainer (let alone a seasoned trainer), nor a client themselves, nor the kind of health care provider who really knows the science of fast, sustainable, health & fitness. Even within the medical community a portion of the information available to health care providers is actually designed so that you won't get results with proper, scientific exercise and nutrition so you'll then conclude "it doesn't work" and resort to more invasive treatment(s) as well as prescriptions which don't work as well in the long run as proper, scientific exercise and nutrition.

So, from those health care providers who aren't submerged in the fitness industry nor doing the fitness lifestyle themselves nor needing to apply the stuff on themselves, its just easier to say something like, "Do anything...all diets work!"...because you get sick of hearing people complain but not take proper action nor follow through long enough to get results!

Part of this phenomena is because health care providers see the affects of being fat on the entire health everyday..they want you to get healthy and be healthy so they don't have to keep giving more medications that simply cover up the symptoms of lack of exercise and nutrition density..there's only so much any doctor, physician assistant or nurse can do for you...you have to do it for yourself....and when you continue to show up with the same complaints (whether with friends, family, or the doctors office or E.R.), but do everything EXCEPT get lean and healthy, you're taking time away from the patients who are doing the correct things to get healthy and still require professional help...its really an arrogant (fear + anger), selfish, self-absorbed way of living and being in the world. .

If a person keeps going to the doctor for the same problems (e.g. joint pain, back pain, lack of energy, etc.) but you don't take charge to change your lifestyle it can becomes frustrating since the doctor is doing their part (checking on you) but you aren't doing your part (proper, scientific exercise and nutrition density).

I mean if someone keeps repeating the same thing to you and you give your best input and they ignore what you say then you repeat the same thing again...what's up with that?!

The primary problem with the "All diets work" mentality is that it doesn't say what kind of weight gets lost. Simply getting "smaller" is not the answer. Most often, if your exercise and nutrition density program isn't specifically set up to retain lean mass and burn fat for energy (you have to get trained for this) the opposite happens...the person looks smaller but they have actually retained the fat or even gained fat but gotten smaller from loss of lean tissue.

Very unfortunately, a small portion of medical care providers know that a large portion of the population wants the miracle quick fix and they simple give up and begin offering quick-fix diets or treatments which provide short term weight loss resulting in long term weight gain (you get tired of telling patients the same thing and them insisting, "... there must be an easy  quick fix you aren't telling me about".)..people think if a doctor is offering or treating then it must be good and "...If they haven't told me about it they must be keeping it a secret since the TV commercials say I can find the quick fix for $19.95".

But, there's many cases of doctors who over prescribe narcotics or perform treatments they really don't have the experience in with disastrous results. I just saw a news blurb here in Montana where a physician is facing 400 felony charges for improperly prescribing medications. Amphetamines were very popular prescriptions for weight loss, approved for such and yet they were found to damage the valves of the heart itself. When I was in Hawaii in 2014 there was a dentist who would overdo the anesthesia and lose patients that way. I heard of a doctor who wasn't properly sanitizing his surgical tools and people got sick from that.

What you really want is a doctor, physician assistant and nurse who tell you the truth and maybe even encourage you to keep doing (correct) exercise and nutrition density. The truth hurts, but it sets you free and leads you to what you insist you want.

So, there's always going to be people who want to cut corners, avoid the real work they need to do and seek the latest miracle cure. We simply can't save every person...some people are too far into self denial and avoidance to be helped (until they get real). The people who are most likely to reach their goals and sustain the results they get are the ones who face up to the personal responsibility of getting properly trained, continuing to increase their knowledge based, monitor their results and fine tune their progress as they go. No one succeeds in a perfectly straight line...it just doesn't happen. But when you pay attention and monitor your results on a monthly basis the way I suggest in other posts, you'll get better results than 80% of the population.

No matter what program you apply, you have to get to the point where you're learning more, refining your process and applying what you have learned about yourself.

All diets do something, but most do more harm than good!

Ask for help.

Obesity As Dis-ease:

One of the tricks of the pharmaceutical companies is to take an everyday behavior, then through a long process of advertising, marketing, lobbying and arm twisting get everyday behaviors listed as a 'disease' which then has an official diagnosis and prognosis. Once something is 'officially' called a disease, the flood gates are opened up to produce drugs to treat the 'symptoms' which are actually and simply daily, personal choices and lifestyle factors.

The outcomes are to simply create more consumers who consume more drugs the more they live an unfat lifestyle and the more drugs they take they more side effects they experience, which in turn requires more prescription drugs to cover up the symptoms of the initial lifestyle choices and prescription drugs!
