Nutritional Hygiene Thermometer
Nutritional Hygiene Thermometer
There's no shortage of people who want to lose weight nowadays. Weight loss seems to be on everyone's mind. There does however seem to be a shortage of people who will take charge of their thoughts while using their thoughts to gain control of their life.
Thinking about your thoughts (introspection) (sentience) is what is supposed to set humans apart from the "lower" species. Being able to think about your thoughts, question them, reflect on them and make decisions which reflect greater insight (and hopefully your current goals) and judgment is really what sets people who reach their goals apart from those who keep wishing and wondering why they can't lose weight and keep it of once and for all.
In all my experiences related to health & wellness (both personal and professional), I've come to notice that a lot of the time people are having thoughts and behaving based on those thoughts, but largely acting unconsciously (unaware of what they are thinking), or how their thoughts form their behaviors. In other words, some thoughts can be working backwards to what you have as goals (a brain running on empty).
It took me what I would consider a very long time to understand and recognize this process, even when its happening right in front of me or even when its happening to me!
People who are under-nourished tend to perceive life as "hard" or difficult.
It seems that our minds are so complex and versatile so that we can adapt and be flexible for just about any situation that comes along but on the opposite side of the coin, our minds are so flexible they can be a bit challenging to get under control. It seems the greatest factor that enables people to use (channel) their mind to productive accomplishments is having role models from an early age who demonstrated how to do it, before we even knew we were learning...hence, the people who things seem to come naturally.
One of the problems today (or Catch-22s as I call them), is that in order for us to be able to "operate" the brain successfully and consistently the brain has to be fueled optimally and consistently.
Why is this? Well, consider how complex the brain is and that it doesn't store many of the fuel items it needs in order to operate itself!
In other words, the body system as a whole stores the fuels the brain needs throughout the body...everywhere...and when it needs some, say carbohydrate for example, it pulls it from the blood stream (the brain uses about 25% of the calories we require, but doesn't store much at all in itself).
If the brain needs B-Complex, it pulls it from the bloodstream (most B-Complex isn't even stored in the body at all!) [B-Complex gets digested, used and whatever isn't used at the moment gets discarded through the urine]. -We're supposed to have an even flow of nutrition throughout the day....grazing?
SO! By now you might be seeing the big picture in that if we don't have a consistent "flow" of the 50 or so key nutrients available throughout the day, then the brain tends to miss out, the brain starts to kind of function lower, and the mind has a lot of trouble staying focused, sticking to task, and even degrades to where it begins to interpret help as a threat and so on.
Ultimately, the brain begins to function more like a reptilian brain (see food-eat food), than a sentient being who can think about their thoughts, discriminate between long term goals and short term satisfaction and ultimately, behavior gets determined by how well your brain is fueled (does your hand grab a Snickers bar or a couple pieces of fruit, and so on)...what edibles do your hands grab and stock up on?
As far as I can tell, this is a safety net to keep the brain fueled so it can keep the heart pumping (a malnourished brain seeks fast, lower nutrition energy) first and foremost (in nature that would be nutritious fruits and vegetables), but today, processed food at 7/11 or Mickie-D's is more fast.
SO! Knowing this isn't enough, because once the brain gets malnourished consistently enough (and believe me I've experienced this), the brain begins making emotional based decisions and the brain makes the hands grab whatever will get sugar or chemicals into the brain the fastest, without regard for the nutrient content (or lack thereof).
But once that "brain high" wears off, the brain wants to go for whatever will be fastest again. So, you can see how the process continues. It really is a type / form of addiction where the person (at least from an emotional behavior aspect) has become dependent on the nutrient-empty, quick-fix.
Now, this is where the "thinking about the thoughts" comes in and the solution to this whacky, man-made cluster-f*** of biochemistry. As a trainer, its part of my job to help people first realize this is happening. Then acknowledging it as its happening. THEN, overriding the emotional thoughts and behaviors, even as the brain is insisting it wants the fast, low nutrition, SADCRAP. Beyond that, it then becomes your responsibility to keep what you learned in the front of your thoughts to get what you insist you want! You have to think!
How I suggest tackling this problem is simply looking at one's history of food and nutrition. If you're like me, you were / are a sugar addict. You can't even imagine not getting your "fix". Telling someone to "stop" doesn't work, because in that vulnerable, malnourished state people can't even stop themselves...see food, eat food (like an alligator, no internal screening process of thought or long term consequences).
So, we know that the process is likely to go on until it doesn't. Its even more likely that a malnourished person will have no appetite for healthy, nutritious foods. In my 30+ years of personal and professional experience, I've found the single most effective way to wean people off SADCRAP is to have them continue eating and drinking as much of it as they think they want until they have been consuming what I refer to as the BNBBs for at LEAST 30 days.
If they try to stop, "will-power" through it, go "cold-turkey" or do whatever cockamamie scheme their undernourished mind can come up with, [prior to having enough nutrition density in the higher functioning parts of the brain], (The malnourished brain always thinks its smarter than the trainer), they simply won't make it.
Regardless how much success they have otherwise had with their workouts, if they try to quit eating SADCRAP before they have enough nutrition density in the brain itself (which is the surplus the rest of the body isn't using), they regress, get off track, beat up on themselves and ultimately yo-yo back to a bodyfat level higher than they started at...you got it, emotional eating...the malnourished brain effectively says, "If you don't nourish me, I'll function at the cognitively lower level (emotional manipulation) and make you "feel bad" for not giving me fast energy and if you withhold it, I'll make you feel even worse"...effectively ensuring a consistent flow of sugar and chemicals.
(The hand grabbing fast energy food or drink, is emotional behavior because it is the opposite of long-term health of the body itself). -Short-term favor to a long term disservice.
How I figured this out (aside from my own learning curve in my own life), is that people who hire a trainer generally want and expect "fast results". Yet, learning to pick healthier foods, prepare them, cook them and have them readily available is not necessarily a fast process. (A steep learning curve).
People who have enough nutrition density in themselves can expect to lose 12-20 pounds a month, starting when their nutrition gets dialed in (BNBBs).
People who don't have enough nutrition can work out for months and actually gain more fat than when they started (the malnourished body stores fat to make up for lack on nutrition density) (cellular starvation).
Those people who get to the point of hiring a trainer have often already realized they can't do it on their own. There are those proactive Type A's who get periodic checkups and seek knowledge before they need it, but most people wait too long to seek professional help.
Those over fed and undernourished types think its all about exercise when in reality weight loss success is 80% nutrition (quality & timing).
What I began to notice is that people who readily take to the BNBBs do better in their workouts, show up for every training session, report faster changes in size, energy, body composition and sense of well being, regardless of how much SADCRAP they're consuming....AND.....as they continue on the BNBBs, their appetite for SADCRAP, fast-energy food & drink and even nicotine decreases a lot the first 30 days and then tapers down to where they are little-by-little craving healthier foods and beverages....as their consumption of healthy whole food increases, they really get focused on success. But unfortunately, the curve for how long it takes to rebuild nutrient levels is too steep for most people to do it without supplements...thanks to manufactured foods designed to deplete nutrients and create nutrient deficits.
And, for those who "forget" to take their supplements or forget to order them, little-by-little they begin to crave SADCRAP and fast energy food and their workout habits begin to suffer. SEE the pattern? I have seen it over, and over and over again.
Absolutely and unequivocally, the successful people will not over ride the overwhelming thoughts to eat what they are craving, but simply supplement their current dietary habits with greater nutrition density (BNBBs), supplementing the brain with nutrition density and while the nutrition density in the brain gradually INCREASES, so does the cravings for SADCRAP DECREASE.
And like clockwork, the pattern can be repeated over and over.
Once the chemistry of the brain can relax a bit from having enough fuel for itself, weight loss success is inevitable.
The trick is to override the malnourished brain's emotions that "nutrition won't help me" and get the supplements into the bloodstream.
Yes, that does bring up the question of quality in supplements being the single greatest factor of whether someone will get these benefits and reach their weight loss goals, but that's been talked about extensively in my previous blurbs.
When people aren't supplementing correctly, the "nutritional hygiene thermometer" in their brain is lower (emotional function enabled), into emotional habits and behaviors and their day will be run by emotional habits and outbursts.
When the "nutritional hygiene thermometer" in their brain is higher (cognitive function fueled), into clear, thinking and behaviors based on long term health & goals will be at the surface and the body realizes it doesn't have to "hold onto" body fat, (the nutrition shortage is over) and fat loss seems effortless.
...your choice.
