Fat Loss: LISTEN to Yourself!

"Permanent, healthy fat loss is an inside job."

Remember that cliche, "Everything you need is inside you?"

Well, after a couple decades of working with a wide range of the population who want to lose "weight", I can honestly say that within the first few conversation with a new client...maybe even the initial consultation,  you can notice which parts of the fat loss process may be of most challenge to them.

That's not to say that the future is defined or unchangeable.

It is meant to say that more often than not we are speaking out loud as well as to ourselves the very words that are keeping us "stuck". This isn't limited to weight loss and fitness. This applies to all areas of endeavor, including relationships whether they are fully supportive or seem outright interferences.

In other words more often than not, without some kind of professional guidance, be it a physician, nurse or personal trainer, the very things we are telling ourselves (affirming) are the very little tidbits which are keeping us stuck in a seemingly endless loop of frustration and yo-yo dieting (a form of self-hypnosis).

To be even more specific, its the "little" things we repeat to ourselves (in the mind), as well as what little things we say they we insist we are "right" about and little things we say which go unchallenged by those around us.

In fact, one of the common denominators with people who have been unsuccessful at a goal (weight loss for the sake of this example), is that they surround themselves with people who tell them they are right, even though they aren't! The person with the underdeveloped self esteem requires near constant approval and has difficulty receiving constructive criticism even when its in their best interest and the interest of their goals (inner conflict).

You see, not everyone will tell us when we're off base. Not everyone knows how to breach that kind of conversation to help us break a cycle of self-disabling behavior. Not everyone cares enough to set a friend straight. Not everyone knows how to tell a friend that, "Yes, there is some truth to what you are saying, but what you are saying is actually preventing you from succeeding".

You have to choose who you surround yourself with by whether they are enabling healthy behaviors and thoughts, versus ones that make you feel good, yet prevent you from being healthy. You want at least one person to tell you where what you're saying might be "off" and need some guidance.

In short, you've heard me talk about the concept of being "dead right"? I learned this idea from a store manager I worked for. He described the process of a pedestrian affirming they have the right when on a cross walk or side walk. Legally, its true, pedestrians have the right of way. But, that doesn't mean their presupposition entirely protects them from harm. No matter how much you insist you legally have the right of way a million variables could "happen" at an intersection or crosswalk that even though you are "right", you end up dead...dead-right.

The dead-right mentality comes from repeating the way we wish (or insist) things should, could or would be...if only...we are the only factor and person and circumstance on the planet, which isn't reality.

In terms of fat loss, the common things that people don't hear themselves saying is the reason(s) why they have body composition of 20% or more:

"The reason I'm fat is because..."

Generally, anything that follows this statement is going to be made up rubbish (rules the person lives by, which aren't true, s they qualify more a superstitions than facts).

The truth is that today, experienced trainers who have really spent time in the trenches over a long period of time interviewing clients, designing programs, getting the client started, checking progress monthly and then knowing what needs to be adjusted if the client isn't getting expected results know what is blocking the client's previous successes before the client ever hears the words they are repeating, which are blocking their success.

You see, the brain is a goal seeking (yet idea proving) mechanism. What that means is that the brain is designed to make us "feel right" and find the evidence we are right even when we are completely and utterly wrong.

Then we begin to believe the B.S. we are telling ourselves and gathering people around us (comfort zone) who affirm that the wrong stuff is actually right (numerous reasons for this). We actually tend to attract and get along with people whose ideas are a general average of our own unconscious beliefs, regardless their validity.

Generally, people who have had the most trouble getting and maintaining their ideal health are repeating things which are not true, yet the more we repeat things, reasons, etc., the more we believe them to be real and ultimately the unfounded, mistaken beliefs (unconscious mis-understandings) affect our behaviors...behaviors based on false beliefs determine success or failure. Get it?

Examples:

"I'm big boned, so I can't lose weight."

"My thyroid doesn't work, so I can't lose weight even if I exercise."

"My family is all big so I'm doomed."

"I tried all the diets, they don't work."

"I'm doing everything my trainer told me to do and it doesn't work."

"I'm not going to change my life to lose weight, who do you think you are!?"

"Fat people are just as healthy as skinny people."

"I don't believe in nutrition / supplements / vegetables."

"Losing more than two pounds a week isn't safe."

In all these examples, the common denominator is that the statement itself blocks / filters the ability to take in new information which would help the person reach their goals, since their mind will block out any information that is contrary to the idea...even though a contrary idea would help them get what they seem to want so bad.

Remember? the mind seeks to prove your idea is right and prove your belief true...even when it isn't!

So, if you don't listen to what you are affirming as true, you'll likely have problems taking action to get what you want...since it contradicts what you are saying is true!

The truth of the matter is that the science of fat loss is already proven. If you're losing less than 20 pounds per month, you aren't doing what has already proven to be safe and effective (resistance training, fat burning cardio and nutrition density).

The adage, "No say... DO," fits here. The "secrets to fat loss" are only secrets to people who are affirming that [they are exceptions to the laws of nature] and people who tell themselves things which systematically block out the very information they need.

A point here is that trainers know if we walk a person through what to "do" they simply burn fat...its that simple (resistance training + fat burn cardio + nutrition density).

Where it can get complicated and frustrating is where even though the client is being walked through the scientific fundamentals of fat loss, they continue to tell themselves things that interfere, sabotage and interfere in their own progress.

Your body listens, responds & manifests what your mind repeats. Regardless of where you are in your own process, listen to the messages you're giving yourself and you'll have insight into why and how you got where you are.

A simple solution is to ask yourself, "What came before this?" and then wait for the answer...then repeat the process to get to the heart of the matter.

In summary, by listening to what you're telling yourself, you'll be far ahead of the learning curve of burning off those 20 pounds per month.

Listening to yourself requires being "present" rather than being depressed (too much energy to the past) or anxious (too much energy worrying about the future) or disassociated (emotionally living a distance from yourself).

Getting different outcomes demands doing correct behaviors for at least 21 days so that the new behavior is more familiar & comfortable than the old behaviors which got you where you didn't want to be.

Ultimately, everyone who makes the decision to get new results has to overcome being stuck (inertia) or by beginning a new direction by figuring out what the big pay off of changing is and then overcoming lack of correct action. Then, replacing the unproductive behaviors with new, correct actions and thoughts. Until the congruent decision has been made, no amount of external motivation or guidance can "change you" from the outside-inward (stages of behavioral change).

"Permanent, healthy fat loss is an inside job."

There's simply no shortcut to success to managing your emotions to motivate yourself to take correct action until momentum takes over. The BNBBs make the process exponentially easier, since motivation and will-power are the result of  brain which has enough BNBBs! (Catch-22).
