Are You Dabbling or Doing?

The science of fat loss is already in place.

Those of us seasoned trainers who have stuck with the industry long enough to find out the most of the information out there in "weight loss land" is bunk, have learned to discern and pass on the critical information to our clients which really, really works.

What doesn't work we don't pass on, since our clientele demand results and significant results within the first 90 days. Generally speaking, people who don't get great results within the first 90 days usually don't stick with their program for the subsequent nine months.

Seasoned trainers know that more is not always better. For the average person, the benefits of resistance training (weight training) for example tops out at about 50 minute sessions, three times a week. Any more, and the exercise becomes stressful, stimulating the stress hormones (cortisol & adrenaline), which has a sort of reversed affect on the body.

Secondly, we know that cardiovascular training helps burn fat (when its set up to target the fat), but anything more than 20 minute sessions as little as 3 times a week can be a waste of time and dip into the stress zone again.

Third, how to set up your nutritional routine has already been outlined as well. there's really no secrets left, unless one ignores what is proven to lower body composition and improve the blood chemistry lab profile.

So! With this trinity in place, you are assured of success...as long as you do it.

Dabbling refers to doing a little bit resistance training, a little bit of cardio, but skipping some of the steps and then coming up with seeming sensible excuses as to why the nutrition laws don't apply to you.

There's two fundamental ways a trainer knows when people are doing or dabbling.

1) ("You can't believe what happened!"When people simply do what they have been shown to do, they call me saying, "You can't believe what happened!"

That's how incredible these three elements work together and whether someone has been working out for years or just beginning for the first time in their life, the speed at which they begin noticing and feeling improvements in their body as well as gaining compliments from those around them skyrocket.

2)) (Referrals):When a client is doing what they have been shown to do, the trainer gets referrals since the client is getting such noticeable improvements in their physique that their circle of influence are stammering to find out how they got such good results!

The client who isn't doing what they have been shown to do or is making changes to what they have been shown, taking away the essential parts of the system will essentially be spinning their wheels doing "busy" work, but missing out on the physique changing elements. These types of behaviors make it so they are "telling" their friends & family what they are busy with, but aren't getting any real noticeable results with, so their friends think their trainer doesn't know what he or she is talking about (dabbling).

Often, these clients will tell themselves they are doing what their trainer showed them, adamantly assure their trainer that they are doing everything exactly as they were shown, but the results show otherwise. Once the trainer says, "Ok, show me" it becomes evident very quickly that they are way off track but have convinced themselves they are doing versus dabbling.

So which is it?

Are You Coachable?

When it comes to helping people with any endeavor, as professionals, we're limited by how "coachable" a person is...how much help a person will accept and then apply on their own.

When I think of a coachable person, I think of individuals who make up a team. Each person has their own identity, but they are looking to the coach to facilitate the team's successes.

In essence, being coachable means simply doing what the coach says to do and shows you to do..."its a doing thing". One of the greatest obstacles to fat loss success is when people think they have a "choice" to get lean and healthy or not. Ultimately, everyone has a choice...they are autonomous...independent, thinking, feeling beings.

Part of (in my humble opinion) why 80% of the population is overweight is that as a society we have been conditioned to behave as though we can consume whatever food and beverages we want, in whatever quantity we want and there aren't any serious consequences. Essentially, we are conditioned to think that if we do begin to experience side effects of SADCRAP, we can just get a prescription or a surgery to correct the "thing". Its never this easy.

Yes, everyone has a choice, between being healthy or not. To me, that isn't really a choice.

Why would anyone choose to be unhealthy, fat and sick? One of the reasons is that the more fat and unhealthy a person gets, the more "not present" they are in their body...suffering. A common denominator for successfully lean & healthy people is that the turning point is when they can no longer stand how they look and feel to themselves. If a person doesn't get "associated" (present), they aren't likely to change their behaviors of moment-to-moment and cumulative choices, which add up to improving health or ruining health one choice at a time.

Believe it or not, some people insist they would rather be unhealthy and fat, as long as it means being "autonomous" (making decisions for themselves), than accepting help which is likely to improve their health and quality of life, since they would have to accept some instruction.

Currently, in our society, there aren't really any short term downsides to making poor health choices. Much of the side effects of SADCRAP take 10-30 years to kick in....that's what junk food is designed to do....create long term consumers who line up at the feeding trough we know as Mickie D's.

One example, take heart dis-ease for example: The first warning sign of a heart attack in 50% of people is death...no noticeable warning signs. With those who survive the first heart attack, 50% will have a second one within a year. Women are twice as likely to die of a heart attack.

Generally, people don't change until they think they have no other choice but to do so, and often they take what they consider the "easy" route, even if it isn't the healthiest route (diet pills, surgery, etc.). Until people experience the downside to the "easy" route, they don't have a relevant reason to do what seems more difficult, yet provides better long term health outcomes.

So, being coachable means asking for help, but then subsequently following through on the information and instruction that your coach offers you. Simply do what you are shown to do. If you don't fully and completely follow though on the guidance given, then you have no way of for sure knowing what will work and what won't.

Following through allows the truth of your body to surface. Without starting somewhere and following through, there's really no way to establish standards of what is true for your body.

Ideally, if the guidance is correct then you can reasonably expect to burn fat, gain strength, gain lean mass, improve your energy level and stave of the top ten de-generative dis-eases many people are experiencing today.

If you don't have a good coach, then you'll definitely find out what doesn't work! But either way, you'll learn stuff about yourself and how your body works.

Being coachable means taking what is shown and simply following through without making up excuses and reasons why you can't do what the person you asked to help you has suggested.

Fat Loss: LISTEN to Yourself!

"Permanent, healthy fat loss is an inside job."

Remember that cliche, "Everything you need is inside you?"

Well, after a couple decades of working with a wide range of the population who want to lose "weight", I can honestly say that within the first few conversation with a new client...maybe even the initial consultation,  you can notice which parts of the fat loss process may be of most challenge to them.

That's not to say that the future is defined or unchangeable.

It is meant to say that more often than not we are speaking out loud as well as to ourselves the very words that are keeping us "stuck". This isn't limited to weight loss and fitness. This applies to all areas of endeavor, including relationships whether they are fully supportive or seem outright interferences.

In other words more often than not, without some kind of professional guidance, be it a physician, nurse or personal trainer, the very things we are telling ourselves (affirming) are the very little tidbits which are keeping us stuck in a seemingly endless loop of frustration and yo-yo dieting (a form of self-hypnosis).

To be even more specific, its the "little" things we repeat to ourselves (in the mind), as well as what little things we say they we insist we are "right" about and little things we say which go unchallenged by those around us.

In fact, one of the common denominators with people who have been unsuccessful at a goal (weight loss for the sake of this example), is that they surround themselves with people who tell them they are right, even though they aren't! The person with the underdeveloped self esteem requires near constant approval and has difficulty receiving constructive criticism even when its in their best interest and the interest of their goals (inner conflict).

You see, not everyone will tell us when we're off base. Not everyone knows how to breach that kind of conversation to help us break a cycle of self-disabling behavior. Not everyone cares enough to set a friend straight. Not everyone knows how to tell a friend that, "Yes, there is some truth to what you are saying, but what you are saying is actually preventing you from succeeding".

You have to choose who you surround yourself with by whether they are enabling healthy behaviors and thoughts, versus ones that make you feel good, yet prevent you from being healthy. You want at least one person to tell you where what you're saying might be "off" and need some guidance.

In short, you've heard me talk about the concept of being "dead right"? I learned this idea from a store manager I worked for. He described the process of a pedestrian affirming they have the right when on a cross walk or side walk. Legally, its true, pedestrians have the right of way. But, that doesn't mean their presupposition entirely protects them from harm. No matter how much you insist you legally have the right of way a million variables could "happen" at an intersection or crosswalk that even though you are "right", you end up dead...dead-right.

The dead-right mentality comes from repeating the way we wish (or insist) things should, could or would be...if only...we are the only factor and person and circumstance on the planet, which isn't reality.

In terms of fat loss, the common things that people don't hear themselves saying is the reason(s) why they have body composition of 20% or more:

"The reason I'm fat is because..."

Generally, anything that follows this statement is going to be made up rubbish (rules the person lives by, which aren't true, s they qualify more a superstitions than facts).

The truth is that today, experienced trainers who have really spent time in the trenches over a long period of time interviewing clients, designing programs, getting the client started, checking progress monthly and then knowing what needs to be adjusted if the client isn't getting expected results know what is blocking the client's previous successes before the client ever hears the words they are repeating, which are blocking their success.

You see, the brain is a goal seeking (yet idea proving) mechanism. What that means is that the brain is designed to make us "feel right" and find the evidence we are right even when we are completely and utterly wrong.

Then we begin to believe the B.S. we are telling ourselves and gathering people around us (comfort zone) who affirm that the wrong stuff is actually right (numerous reasons for this). We actually tend to attract and get along with people whose ideas are a general average of our own unconscious beliefs, regardless their validity.

Generally, people who have had the most trouble getting and maintaining their ideal health are repeating things which are not true, yet the more we repeat things, reasons, etc., the more we believe them to be real and ultimately the unfounded, mistaken beliefs (unconscious mis-understandings) affect our behaviors...behaviors based on false beliefs determine success or failure. Get it?

Examples:

"I'm big boned, so I can't lose weight."

"My thyroid doesn't work, so I can't lose weight even if I exercise."

"My family is all big so I'm doomed."

"I tried all the diets, they don't work."

"I'm doing everything my trainer told me to do and it doesn't work."

"I'm not going to change my life to lose weight, who do you think you are!?"

"Fat people are just as healthy as skinny people."

"I don't believe in nutrition / supplements / vegetables."

"Losing more than two pounds a week isn't safe."

In all these examples, the common denominator is that the statement itself blocks / filters the ability to take in new information which would help the person reach their goals, since their mind will block out any information that is contrary to the idea...even though a contrary idea would help them get what they seem to want so bad.

Remember? the mind seeks to prove your idea is right and prove your belief true...even when it isn't!

So, if you don't listen to what you are affirming as true, you'll likely have problems taking action to get what you want...since it contradicts what you are saying is true!

The truth of the matter is that the science of fat loss is already proven. If you're losing less than 20 pounds per month, you aren't doing what has already proven to be safe and effective (resistance training, fat burning cardio and nutrition density).

The adage, "No say... DO," fits here. The "secrets to fat loss" are only secrets to people who are affirming that [they are exceptions to the laws of nature] and people who tell themselves things which systematically block out the very information they need.

A point here is that trainers know if we walk a person through what to "do" they simply burn fat...its that simple (resistance training + fat burn cardio + nutrition density).

Where it can get complicated and frustrating is where even though the client is being walked through the scientific fundamentals of fat loss, they continue to tell themselves things that interfere, sabotage and interfere in their own progress.

Your body listens, responds & manifests what your mind repeats. Regardless of where you are in your own process, listen to the messages you're giving yourself and you'll have insight into why and how you got where you are.

A simple solution is to ask yourself, "What came before this?" and then wait for the answer...then repeat the process to get to the heart of the matter.

In summary, by listening to what you're telling yourself, you'll be far ahead of the learning curve of burning off those 20 pounds per month.

Listening to yourself requires being "present" rather than being depressed (too much energy to the past) or anxious (too much energy worrying about the future) or disassociated (emotionally living a distance from yourself).

Getting different outcomes demands doing correct behaviors for at least 21 days so that the new behavior is more familiar & comfortable than the old behaviors which got you where you didn't want to be.

Ultimately, everyone who makes the decision to get new results has to overcome being stuck (inertia) or by beginning a new direction by figuring out what the big pay off of changing is and then overcoming lack of correct action. Then, replacing the unproductive behaviors with new, correct actions and thoughts. Until the congruent decision has been made, no amount of external motivation or guidance can "change you" from the outside-inward (stages of behavioral change).

"Permanent, healthy fat loss is an inside job."

There's simply no shortcut to success to managing your emotions to motivate yourself to take correct action until momentum takes over. The BNBBs make the process exponentially easier, since motivation and will-power are the result of  brain which has enough BNBBs! (Catch-22).
